Helmsley to Rievaulx
The route from the market town of Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey is a well-trodden one, but it never loses its capacity to delight and inspire. This 7-mile circular route climbs gently for sweeping views of town and castle before dropping down through charming bluebell woods to reach the peaceful village and tranquil ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. Either return the same way, or complete a circuit – and take in more stupendous views – via dramatically sited Rievaulx Terrace and Griff Farm, high above the abbey.
Duncombe Park
The walk starts from Helmsley, an old market town in the North York Moors with an array of interesting independent shops, historic buildings and quaint cottages. It is certainly worth spending some time here either before or after the walk. The route then goes up the main driveway to Duncombe Park, with open parkland and extensive views of both Helmsley and the surrounding North Yorkshire Moors. The route passes through some more parkland before entering woodland which skirts the outside of the estate.
The impressive view of Duncombe Park House can be seen from the woodland. The route eventually leads to the scenic and tranquil River Rye, where a number of different species of birds can be seen, e.g. kingfishers and woodpeckers. The route gradually leaves the riverside and there is a series of steps which takes the walker back to the main drive, where it is a short walk back to the start.
The National Centre for Birds of Prey (NCBP) is a new visitor attraction situated at the magnificent Duncombe Park estate in Helmsley.
They are open to visitors 7 days a week (including Sundays and Bank Holidays) from 10am. They open every day from 28th January until 24th December.
Many of the birds take to the skies in our spectacular flying demonstrations or are part of important breeding projects. From the tiny terrestrial Burrowing Owl to the mighty and majestic Steller’s Sea Eagle the National Centre for Birds of Prey houses the largest collection of birds of prey in the north of England.
